• The team operates nationally covering 24-hours, 365 days a year.
• We provide an urgent response solution for the transportation of patients being detained under the Mental Health Act or Mental Capacity Act, namely individuals who have a range of mental health/behavioural disorders including Learning Difficulties, Autism and Asperger’s, Dementia and Psychosis.
• We work in partnership with NHS Trusts, Mental Health Trusts and private hospitals.
• Our transfer journeys include to and from hospitals and secure mental health facilities, prisons, police stations, home addresses, court appearances plus other psychiatric settings.

This is no ordinary job and requires a special person to undertake a wide variety of duties.

• Greet a patient who may be reluctant to travel using your powers of persuasion to encourage the patient to engage with you.
• Deescalate a situation when a patient shows signs of being agitated.
• Reassure a confused patient who requires understanding.
• Instil confidence in a patient who may be frightened.
• Treat all patients with dignity and respect any cultural and/or religious beliefs.
• Communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals including your team members, medical professionals and the general public.
• React quickly to potentially dangerous situations where health and safety may be compromised.
• Work within the strict parameters of the law regarding movement of mentally ill individuals.

• Maintain a high standard of vehicle and equipment serviceability, cleanliness and permanent readiness. Carry out daily vehicle checks.
• Drive allocated vehicles in non-emergency conditions.
• Provide a transfer that is both a smooth and comfortable experience for patients and non-detrimental to the patient’s condition.
• Use a handheld device/tablet to update the control centre regarding your patient’s journey.

• A comprehensive 2 weeks induction and training course including best practice surrounding the transfer of patients in accordance with the Mental Health Act.
• On‑going training and development with the opportunity to acquire additional recognised qualifications throughout your career with UKEMS.
• All required training paid for, both in terms of course fees and salary while training.

• Physical ability, this post is physically demanding. You must be able to lift together with a colleague a minimum of c 11 stone / 70kgs.
• Proven ability to handle sensitive situations professionally, assertively and tactfully.
• The ability to work under pressure and as part of a team.
• You will have worked with the public in a role that required communicating clearly in a style and tone that engages your audience.

• Have a full clean driving licence.
• Flexible regards working hours, prepared to work unsociable hours, weekends, and public holidays and throughout the night.
