Data Engineer
Job Purpose
To enhance Map Action’s data processing and automation capabilities.
LocationRemote – based in the United Kingdom.
Salary & Contract£36,000-£40,000 per annum, subject to experience. Full‑time, substantive 12‑month position, starting ASAP.
Reports ToHead of Data & GIS.
OpportunityAs a Geospatial Data Engineer you will support the delivery of geospatial data processing and automation projects in a fast‑paced humanitarian response organisation. You will work with a community of expert volunteers and colleagues to contribute to emergency response, preparedness, anticipatory action and training.
Main Responsibilities- Conduct and automate data collection and processing scripts.
- Design and maintain optimal, performant data pipeline architectures.
- Propose improvements to infrastructure, schemas, platforms and tool chains.
- Ensure find‑ability, availability, scalability, reproducibility, accessibility, interoperability and reusability of all data products.
- Assist in the automation, provision and management of development environments, source‑code, build‑tools, pipelines and deployments.
- Support ad‑hoc data processing during Map Action’s emergency responses in collaboration with the GIS Coordinator and volunteer team.
- Support data‑related project scoping with the Head of Data & GIS.
- Support internal system maintenance and administration with the IT Support Engineer.
- Engage with the volunteer team on data‑related projects.
- Support the development of Data Engineer and Data Science training materials with the Head of Capacity Building.
- Degree or equivalent experience in Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, Software Development, Information Technology or a related field.
- At least one year of professional experience in data engineering.
- Proficiency with Python and Jupyter Notebooks.
- Experience working with geospatial data (raster and vector).
- Strong knowledge of databases (No
SQL, SQL, Graph databases, principles of RDBs). - Data pipeline design skills.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS or Azure.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
- Collaborative code management using Git & Git Hub.
- Experience with QGIS or ArcGIS.
- Systems Engineering experience.
- Understanding of the software development life cycle (preferably Agile).
- Grounding in containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Shell scripting.
- Experience with BI.
- Interest in machine learning / deep learning / AI / statistics.
- Project management experience.
- Humanitarian knowledge or experience.
- Remote position with required attendance at team days near the Map Action office in Oxfordshire at least 6 times per year, at own expense.
- Full‑time position for 12 months with a possible extension to end of 2026.
- Expected travel to some weekend training events (camping at various venues around the UK); travel expenses paid and reasonable time off in lieu provided.
- 30 days holiday (pro‑rata) with a workplace pension and paid training opportunities.
- Must have the right to live and work in the UK; no relocation assistance.
- Part‑time work of 4 days a week considered – indicate preference when applying.
- Contract may be extended if additional funding is secured.
