Consultant Histopathologist / Cytopathologist – Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, UK

Position Summary:

We are seeking a qualified Consultant Histopathologist / Cytopathologist to join our Pathology Services as part of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. The post is Permanent with Full‑time hours (10 sessions per week) and carries a salary band of £109,725–£145,478 per annum (pay band European). Applications will close on 1 January 2026.

• Report on general diagnostic surgical pathology, taking nominal responsibility for one reporting day per week and supervising junior staff.
• Participate in cancer multidisciplinary team meetings as lead or deputy pathologist.
• Administer routine cytology reporting – approximately one‑sixth of the non‑gynaecological workload – and supervise registrar reporting.
• Maintain one or two subspecialty interests (e.g., gynae colposcopy, liver, haematopathology, inflammatory skin).
• Engage in external quality assurance schemes, clinical audits and continuous service improvement.
• Provide teaching and supervised training to trainees at GMC‑accredited levels.

• FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
• Full clinical registration with the GMC (or eligibility within 6 months of interview).
• Clinical training in histopathology and cytopathology sufficient for independent consultant practice.
• Experience in clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice.

• Higher degree (PhD, MD, etc.).
• Experience in molecular pathology, digital pathology and research publication.
• Leadership or management experience in laboratory settings.

• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Strong teamwork and multi‑professional collaboration.
• Organisational and prioritisation skills.
• Commitment to quality improvement, audit and information systems.
