You’ll help keep our nation moving every day. This role involves the daily upkeep of the rail network, working outdoors in a small team, and supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway safe and smooth for passengers and freight.
AboutThe Role (External)
Operatives work outside in all conditions and times of the year, day or night. You’ll handle demanding manual work and transport kit across challenging terrain. A safety focus and teamwork are essential, as you’ll often work next to moving trains at high speed.

- Communication – clear communication for safe and effective operations.
- Proactive planning – punctual, with van and equipment ready, anticipating team needs.
- Working under pressure – stay calm outdoors with passing trains.
- Following rules and instructions – understand and respect rules, and challenge unsafe situations.
- Willingness to learn – continuously develop skills relevant to your discipline.
- Experience as an arborist – (optional).
- Shifts – changing pattern including days, nights, and weekends.
- Outdoor working – comfortable in all weather conditions.
- Safe working – subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment, BPSS checks, hearing and eyesight examinations.
- Driving – category B licence required to drive Network Rail vehicles.
- Commute – must be within a 60‑minute commute of the location.
