Network Rail is looking for an Operative to support the maintenance of the rail network across Reading Napier Road. You will work outdoors in a small team, ensuring safety and reliability for passengers and freight users.

As an Operative you will work outside in all weather conditions, often under tight time‑constraints. You will transport kit, maintain equipment, and support your team’s safety and operational effectiveness.

• Transport and set up maintenance kit across challenging terrain.
• Maintain and inspect overhead line equipment to the company safety and quality standards.
• Work safely in the vicinity of moving trains, following all rules and local signage.
• Collaborate with the team to plan daily work, ensuring van and equipment are ready for each shift.
• Provide lookout and support duties, keeping all personnel safe.

• Team working – ability to collaborate closely with a small, multi‑skilled crew.
• Communication – clear, concise verbal and written skills for safety‑critical tasks.
• Proactive planning – punctuality, preparedness, and foresight in work planning.
• Working under pressure – maintain calm and focus in outdoor, high‑risk environments.
• Rule‑following – understand and respect safety procedures; can challenge unsafe practices.
• Willingness to learn – undertake target‑led training and stay current with evolving standards.

• Shift work – variable schedule including days, nights, and weekends.
• Outdoor exposure – comfortable working in all weather conditions.
• Clearance – must undergo drug & alcohol testing, medical assessment, BPSS checks, hearing and eyesight examination.
• Driving licence – category B required to operate Network Rail vehicles.
• Commute – within a 60‑minute travel radius of the location.

• Annual salary of £31,444 per annum.
