Position Overview
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, detailed, and competitive cost estimates for plumbing, heating, and gas fitting projects across residential, commercial, and light industrial sectors. This includes reviewing drawings, collecting supplier and subcontractor pricing, preparing professional bid proposals, and ensuring all estimates meet Alberta codes, regulations, and internal profitability standards.
The Estimator reports directly to the General Manager or CEO and works closely with field and office personnel.
Key Responsibilities- Review and analyze project drawings, specifications, and scope of work
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for materials, labour, equipment, and subcontracted work
- Conduct site visits in Red Deer and Central Alberta for measurements and scope verification
- Solicit and evaluate supplier and subcontractor pricing to ensure competitive bids
- Prepare and submit professional proposals and tender documents within required timelines
- Ensure compliance with the Alberta Building Code, Alberta Gas Code, and safety regulations
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site walkthroughs, and post-bid reviews
- Assist with cost tracking, budgeting, and change order pricing
- Maintain organized tender records and historical cost data
- Support improvements to estimating tools, templates, and workflows
- Provide insights to enhance bid competitiveness and operational efficiency
- Valid Driver’s Licence
- Journeyperson Certification in Plumbing & Gasfitting B (preferred)
- Minimum 5 years' experience in plumbing, heating, or gas fitting, including at least 2 years in estimating or project management
- Strong understanding of plumbing and heating systems, materials, and installation practices
- Experience estimating residential, commercial, or light industrial projects within Alberta
- Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Office
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Effective communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and customer satisfaction
- Adaptability and strong problem-solving skills
- Combination of office work and on-site project assessment
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Extended periods of sitting or standing depending on task requirements
- Occasional additional hours to meet tender deadlines
