Anticipated Time Commitment: 48 hours/month (call and base/flying time).

The Transport Physician (TP) reports to the STARS Saskatchewan Medical Director and works with a team of highly skilled medical providers specializing in the care of critically ill and injured patients.
Key Areas of InvolvementThe TP will be an acute care practitioner (emergency medicine, anesthesia, ICU, trauma surgery) who will work with a Registered Flight Nurse and a Critical Care Paramedic either in person or online to provide high-quality care and service. Responsibilities include rapid response assessment, intervention, and safe transport of critically ill or injured patients of all ages from the scene of an accident or during inter-facility transfer.
This service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Facilitate critical care patient transfers in Saskatchewan via both remote consult or by physically attending to patient(s);
- Perform an average of 48 hours of a mix of on-call and base time per month;
- Respond within 15 minutes to a helipad or base when on-call, and be ready with flight suit, boots, and requisite gear;
- Be available via cell phone immediately while on call or at base;
- Attend a minimum of 1 base day per year (physically present for a full day shift on Wednesdays if on call that day);
- Conduct Interfacility Transfer Requests—ensuring patients are medically suitable for transport and the most appropriate transport modality and medical expertise are assigned; also manage scene calls including online consultation, patient update, management plan or disposition, and complex scene calls such as Mass Casualty Incidents;
- Fly on fixed-wing flights and use ground ambulances for critical care patient transfers as needed;
- Participate in performance reviews at regular intervals to support continuing learning and effectiveness;
- Provide over-the-phone medical control for Saskatchewan Air Ambulance when on call and required;
- Undertake additional duties such as Educational Rounds presentations, Foundation/Charity presentations, TP Meetings and updates.
- Be an acute care practitioner in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, ICU, or Trauma Surgery;
- Be licensed to practice in Saskatchewan with an active certificate of registration for independent practice and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan;
- Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada;
- Have experience and/or training in a pre-hospital environment and transport medicine (strong asset);
- Understand Saskatchewan’s critical care and Red Patient Referral transfer systems;
- Demonstrate commitment to quality assurance and quality improvement;
- Have thorough knowledge of current and new/emerging quality guidelines and standards for critical care transport and pre-hospital medicine;
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Have a demonstrated track record of leading high-acuity teams;
- Participate in performance reviews at regular intervals to support continuing learning and effectiveness.
As this position has been identified as safety sensitive, employment of the preferred candidate will be conditional upon successful completion of required pre-employment alcohol and drug assessment.
