Position Summary
School Crossing Guards are responsible for ensuring the safety of children crossing the street as they travel to and from school. They are also responsible for reporting any incidents relating to drivers or pedestrians at the corner they are servicing.

Duties and Responsibilities:Supervision of childrenResponding to pedestrian inquiries and providing information, as requiredSpreading salt/sand mixture around sidewalk and crosswalk areas during winter months to melt ice and improve tractionPerforming administrative duties (i.e., accident or incident reports)Required Skills/Knowledge
Carrying a sign weighing 2 – 5 pounds intermittently, for up to one hour at a timeWalking and standing throughout the entire shiftAbility to be alert and observant of changing traffic conditions and childrenMust be able to work in adverse weather conditionsMust provide a medical certificate confirming ability to carry out duties and physical demands (as outlined above)Good communication skillsReliability and punctuality in attendance for children waiting to crossGood judgment and decision-making abilitiesCommitment to personal growth, development, and leadership opportunitiesOpenness to sharing new ideas and challenging the status quoInitiative in participating in a culture of learning, mentoring, and sharingContribution to building and maintaining a positive cultureDemonstrates the City’s core values of service, collaboration, care, and courageSatisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check requiredLeadership Competencies
