Description Overview and Purpose of the Role

Reporting directly to the Manager of Quality, Safety & Enterprise Risk, this role is primarily responsible for the accurate and timely coding and abstracting of health information for ambulatory visits (NACRS). Working within a multidisciplinary environment, the Health Information Coder is also involved in data quality improvement initiatives.

Key

Duties & Responsibilities Health Information Management
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential patient health records in accordance with provincial and federal legislation.
  • Ensure documentation and coding standards are met.
  • Oversee chart audits and data quality reviews to ensure completeness and consistency of clinical documentation.
Compliance & Quality Improvement
  • Assist in preparation for accreditation, Ministry of Health audits, and other regulatory reviews.
  • Provide data support for clinical quality initiatives, incident reviews, and risk management.
  • Support implementation and monitoring of evidence‑based practices and performance benchmarks.
  • Stay up‑to‑date on the latest developments in health information management and technology.
  • Contribute to research efforts aimed at improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
  • Provide training and support to staff on documentation practices and data compliance.

  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned
Corporate Responsibilities
  • Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines.
Education,

Skills & Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree from an accredited program in health information management or health record technology, or equivalent (required)
  • Certification and active member in good standing with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (required)
  • Minimum, three (3) years related experience in NACRS coding and abstracting in a healthcare setting
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario health system reporting requirements, including CIHI Coding and Abstracting Standards, and hospital coding (ICD-10-CA, CCI)
  • Familiarity with surgical, ambulatory care, and diagnostic imaging workflows and data standards is an asset.
  • Prior experience with Meditech Expanse and Med
    2020, Win Recs is an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, including senior leadership and external stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proven ability to work independently on moderately complex projects with minimal supervision
  • Ability to exercise significant discretion and sensitivity involving responsibility for protecting sensitive information and ensuring compliance with data security policies and oversight of confidentiality procedures
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check/vulnerable sector check
  • Provide proof of Immunization and TB records
