The Senior Mechanical Engineer with Construction Supervision provides authoritative technical leadership and on‐site oversight for the installation, testing, and commissioning of complex mechanical systems. This role bridges advanced design expertise with hands‑on field execution, ensuring mechanical installations meet design specifications, performance criteria, safety standards, and project objectives. The incumbent serves as the primary technical authority for all mechanical systems from procurement through final commissioning.
CoreResponsibilities
A. Technical Leadership & Design Review (Pre-Construction & Office-Based)
- Design Validation: Conduct comprehensive reviews of mechanical design packages (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, medical gases, industrial systems) for constructability, efficiency, and compliance with ASHRAE, IPC, NFPA, SMACNA, LEED/Estidama, and local codes.
- BIM/VDC Coordination: Lead 3D coordination efforts using Revit, Navisworks, or similar platforms to resolve clashes between mechanical, structural, architectural, and electrical systems prior to construction.
- Procurement Support: Evaluate contractor and supplier submittals, including shop drawings, material samples, equipment data, and method statements. Approve major equipment selection (chillers, boilers, AHUs, pumps, BMS components).
- Value Engineering: Provide expert recommendations for cost‑effective alternatives that maintain design intent, system performance, and lifecycle value.
- On‑Site Technical Authority: Act as the final point of resolution for all mechanical site issues, interpreting design documents and approving field changes or deviations.
- Quality Assurance/Control (QA/QC):
- Implement and enforce a project‑specific Mechanical QA/QC Plan.
- Perform daily inspections of installations: piping (welding, supports, insulation), ductwork (sealing, leakage), equipment setting and alignment, equipment room layouts, and seismic bracing.
- Witness and document critical tests: hydrostatic pressure tests, air/water balancing, duct leakage tests, pipe flushing and chlorination, equipment startup and vibration analysis.
- Develop and execute detailed commissioning plans, including pre‑functional checklists, functional performance tests (FPTs), and integrated system tests (ISTs).
- Troubleshoot system performance issues and manage the resolution of commissioning deficiencies.
- Verify Building Management System (BMS) programming and point‑to‑point checks.
- Progress & Interface Management: Monitor mechanical work progress against the master schedule. Manage critical interfaces between mechanical work and other trades (electrical, structural, architectural finishes) to prevent conflicts.
- Safety Leadership: Ensure all mechanical work adheres to approved safe work methods and the project's Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) plan. Participate in safety walks and audits.
- Stakeholder Communication: Serve as the primary technical liaison between the client, design team, general contractor, and mechanical subcontractors. Prepare and present clear, concise technical reports.
- Contract & Change Management: Review and technically validate contractor Requests for Information (RFIs) and Change Order Requests. Assess impacts on system performance, schedule, and budget.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship: Supervise and mentor junior mechanical engineers, inspectors, and commissioning specialists on site.
- Project Closeout: Ensure delivery of complete and accurate as‑built drawings, Operation & Maintenance (O&M) manuals, warranty certificates, and spare parts. Conduct training sessions for the client's facilities management team.
- Mandatory: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution.
- Mandatory: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license; ability to obtain licensure by reciprocity may be acceptable.
- Highly Desirable: Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Preferred
Certifications:
LEED AP BD+C, Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), Project Management Professional (PMP), OSHA 30‑Hour.
- Minimum 10‑15 years of progressive experience in mechanical design and construction supervision.
- Mid‑Senior level
