Steel Phalt, a Harsco Environmental company, has been creating safer roads by developing and manufacturing high‑performance asphalt products for the UK industry since the 1960s. Based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Steel Phalt works closely with councils, local authorities and contractors nationwide to deliver durable roads for a sustainable world.

As an apprentice laboratory technician you will gain nationally recognised qualifications through the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre, completing a Level 3 Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician apprenticeship. During the first year you will study full‑time at the centre, then attend for knowledge study one day per week.

• Assist in the preparation and testing of asphalt samples using standard laboratory equipment and procedures
• Record and report test results accurately and promptly
• Verify compliance of results and initiate corrective action where necessary
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment in accordance with health and safety regulations
• Support senior technicians in conducting quality control checks on raw materials and finished products
• Help calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment
• Learn and apply relevant industry standards (e.g., BS EN standards) and internal procedures
• Participate in training and development activities as part of the apprenticeship program
• Perform other duties efficiently and effectively as required by the Technical department

Schedule:

Monday to Friday, with start and finish times and shift pattern determined by the employing company.
