Health Assurance Veterinarian – 12 month fixed term contract

Join Genus PLC as a Health Assurance Veterinarian in a 12‑month fixed‑term contract covering maternity leave, with an ideal start date of March to receive a robust handover.

Role Overview

Are you passionate about delivering high‑quality veterinary care and driving continuous improvements in herd health? We need a dedicated Health Assurance Vet to play a key role in the care and management of our resident herds, with a primary focus on the Genetic Nucleus herd.

You Will Clinical Care & Herd Health
  • Deliver comprehensive veterinary care across the Genetic Nucleus herd and Semen Collection Centres (SCCs).
  • Prevent, diagnose, monitor, and treat health conditions in calves, heifers, and bulls, ensuring high‑quality record‑keeping.
  • Lead all aspects of calving, including assisting calvings and performing caesarean sections when required.
  • Manage pregnant animals through the pre‑calving period using effective monitoring practices.
Biosecurity, Safety & Compliance
  • Uphold gold‑standard biosecurity and Health & Safety across all sites, modelling best practice at all times.
  • Report, record, and support investigations of any biosecurity or safety breaches.
  • Ensure full compliance with UK/EU regulations across exports, SCC operations, routine testing, and certification.
  • Complete all licensing and export documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
Continuous Improvement
  • Review and improve herd health protocols regularly, applying evidence‑based solutions.
  • Investigate root causes of performance or health challenges and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Research and evaluate new veterinary products, treatments, and preventative strategies to enhance health outcomes.
  • Develop expertise in the T15 breed to support improvements in survival, health, and productivity.
Training, Collaboration & Team Support
  • Provide hands‑on training to livestock staff on biosecurity, welfare, health protocols, and husbandry.
  • Collaborate with the wider veterinary team to develop consistent training and best‑practice materials.
  • Mentor colleagues to build confidence and competence in calving management and animal health practices.
  • Support team planning and coordination across testing, exports, animal movements, and required documentation.
Centre Vet Responsibilities (SCCs)
  • Build strong working relationships with APHA and DEFRA colleagues.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant domestic and EU legislation affecting SCC operations and semen exports.
  • Work with the veterinary team to complete licensing, testing, and export paperwork.
Health Testing & Reporting
  • Plan, organise, and complete statutory and internal health testing requirements.
  • Maintain clear, accurate records to support audits, reporting, and herd health planning.
General Responsibilities
  • Treat all colleagues and stakeholders with professionalism and respect.
  • Take ownership of your responsibilities and work collaboratively to support team objectives.
  • Provide administrative support — including reporting and coding invoices — where required.
  • Engage fully in training, team meetings, and development activities.
Requirements Travel
  • Flexible to travel between Genus sites, including some out‑of‑hours work.
Education & Licensure
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or equivalent degree.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in large‑animal veterinary practice.
  • Working knowledge of the industry and enthusiasm for continued learning.
Skills & Attributes
  • Strong clinical capability across young stock, herd health, reproductive management, and calving.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Basic computer competence (training can be provided).
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to animal welfare and safety.
