Large Volume Inorganic Chemicals (LVIC) installations are required to use ‘Best Available Techniques’ (BAT) to reduce emissions to air, water and land. We have established a process for the definition of BAT within the UK. The regime will use the BAT concept principles of: a transparent, collaborative, data and evidence led process that safeguards and builds on the current high levels of environmental protection.
You’ll be responsible for drafting BAT Conclusions, liaising with Technical Working Groups and presenting a final document suitable for publication as a new, UK-wide, environmental standard for industry.

You will have at least 5 years working experience and a solid understanding of environmental regulation and the LVIC industry.
- Specialist knowledge and understanding of the LVIC industry
- Good understanding of process engineering and environmental issues
- Strong understanding of environmental legislation and policy in the UK
- Capability to critically analyse technical arguments and data
- Ability to work with and write technical documents
Good project management skills and a drive to complete
- collection and technical analysis of complex industrial data
- understanding the implications of BAT Conclusions in permits, on industry and the environment
- verbal and written communication
- building and maintaining relationships
- planning, prioritising and organising tasks and resources to ensure timely and effective results
- responding flexibly to challenges and building consensus

Some travel and overnight stays may be required.
The team led by the UK BAT team is embedded within the Environment & Business Directorate but reports to DEFRA and the Standards Council.
Length of contract: up to 2 years from appointment.
