Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse Ophthalmology Outpatients
Full‑time position with Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Shift pattern: four long days – 8:00 pm to 6:00 pm on three days and one shift 8:30 pm to 6:00 pm.
Job SummaryResponsible for leading the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department, acting as a positive role model, promoting effective teamwork and encouraging continuous development. The role works closely with the Senior Sister and involves assessment, planning and evaluation of patient care programmes, performance management of the nursing team and coordination of staff educational needs.
Responsibilities- Overall responsibility for patient assessment, management plans and quality of care within the department.
- Supervise and support nursing staff, ensuring effective shift handover.
- Facilitate performance management, including annual appraisals and development plans.
- Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of care programmes.
- Support the intravitreal injection service and develop expanded practice competencies.
- Encourage and organise professional development and training for staff.
- Minimum 2 years current experience at Band 5 in secondary care, or previous leadership experience at Band 6 for over 2 years.
- Experience as a facilitator of Clinical Governance and risk management.
- Regular experience taking charge of a shift as a coordinator, managing staffing levels.
- Experience managing staff performance, annual appraisals and development plans.
- Minimum 1 year experience in an ophthalmology setting.
- Willingness to support the intravitreal injection service once expanded practice protocols are achieved.
- Leadership qualification or willingness to undertake.
- Basic postgraduate ophthalmology nursing qualification.
- NMC registration.
- Teaching and assessing experience.
- Assessor award or mentorship qualification.
- First‑level registered nurse with Diploma or Degree in Nursing, or equivalent postgraduate level continuing professional development.
