Overview
Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) – Experienced
U.S. Customs and Border Protection offers a career in law enforcement with the opportunity to work with an elite team of trained professionals whose mission is protecting America, safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and supporting the nation’s economic prosperity. You will be part of the Department of Homeland Security workforce, protecting American interests and security.
Responsibilities- Enforce customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
- Facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
- Conduct inspections of individuals and conveyances.
- Determine the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
- Prevent illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.
You will be asked to provide your preference for mission-critical locations. Duty locations are subject to vacancies, operational requirements, and may change based on agency needs.
Salary and Benefits- Base salary: GS-9, $61,111–$124,443 per year (locality pay varies by duty location).
- A fully trained CBPO is eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to starting salary.
- Benefits include health and dental insurance, annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan.
- Location incentives: 15%–25% of salary for up to 3 years; up to 25% in San Francisco for up to 4 years; other locations have varying incentives.
You may qualify for the GS-9 grade level through experience, education, or a combination of both.
- Experience:
At least 1 year of specialized experience including detaining or arresting violators, enforcing laws related to importing/exporting and international shipping, using intelligence techniques and risk assessments, and conducting law enforcement interviews. - Education substitution:
Master’s degree or two years of graduate study, or a J.D./LL.B. from an accredited institution. - Combination of experience and education:
Assessed via resume and submitted transcripts. - Other requirements: U.S. citizenship; residency in the U.S. for eligibility as described; age restrictions; veterans’ preference; formal training (pre-academy, CBP Academy); language requirements at certain locations.
