Job description Job responsibilitiesWe are seeking to appoint a dynamic core trainee who has completed their foundation training. This 2-year post allows the core trainee to conduct a piece of supervised research while gaining more clinical experience before their ST application. By the end of the candidates tenure, we envisage that he/she would have excelled in all core surgical competencies and be in an enviable position for competitive entry into higher surgical training.
The colorectal department at York and Scarborough is active in research, and we have collaborated with the University of York to investigate the role of sodium channels in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer (SCION-Sodium channels in Colorectal cancer - an Ion Study). You will have space at the Brackenbury laboratory in the University of York, where research supervision will be provided during your tenure.
We have also secured local and national funding from the Elsie May Sykes award and Bowel Cancer Research UK, respectively, to fund the laboratory costs of your research. We will encourage the candidate to obtain a higher degree (separate funding required) as part of the project, and we expect the candidate to generate both presentations and publications from their research output.
The candidate will receive a salary for their on-call commitments at CT level in General Surgery at Scarborough Hospital. The on-call rota will be 1:9. This is split into 2 shifts 8am until 8pm and then a separate shift of 8pm-8am. The on-call is always supported by the surgical registrar. The candidate has no elective commitment and is expected to conduct their research then.
As such, the post will entail a combination of academic and clinical work with an approximately 30:70 split initially- this is subject to review based on satisfactory progress of the research work.
The post holder will be expected to keep themselves up-to-date with current knowledge and practice, to attend clinical meetings & teaching sessions within the department and to participate in audit & in-service training of other healthcare professionals. The post holder will be required to deputise for absent colleagues from time to time and to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
The post holder will also be required to be available exceptionally for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
