Postdoctoral Research Fellow in aqueous chemistry and thermochemical modelling

The Nuclear Safety and Multiphase Flows Laboratory (NS-ECMFL) is a research group in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich, led by Prof. Dr. Annalisa Manera.

Our lab specializes in both experimental and computational studies of multiphase flows and thermal-hydraulic phenomena in nuclear systems. We develop advanced measurement techniques, perform high-resolution experiments, and conduct multi-scale, multi-physics simulations. Our work aims to improve nuclear reactor safety and efficiency through innovative passive safety systems and detailed analysis of complex fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes.

In this context, we invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position to work on an international project, focusing on predicting and managing liquid source terms in severe nuclear accidents.

Project background

The following project, where ETH Zurich plays a crucial role, significantly contributing to various research and development aspects of nuclear safely. The focus of the project is to gather essential data on the liquid source term, improve our understanding of the associated phenomena and develop tools to simulate the relevant processes. In collaboration with PSI, ETH reviews data from previous projects, focusing on leaching tests of Chornobyl's lava in various liquids, and also contributes to reviewing data from Fukushima-related research projects, with a particular focus on thermodynamic data for caesium and strontium compounds.

ETH is also actively engaged in developing and validating new simulation models. This includes reviewing other simulation tools and databases, such as thermodynamic solvers, to enhance our understanding of liquid speciation and dissolution process. ETH contributes to summarizing knowledge on the use of the GEMS thermochemical solver and HERACLES thermodynamic database, specifically dedicated to nuclear applications. These efforts are integral to developing and integrating new models into severe accident (SA) codes, which include assessing and validating thermodynamic data to predict the behaviour of fission products like caesium and strontium in liquid phases during accidents.

In the context ot the project, you duties involvethe following tasks:

  • Extension and validation of thermodynamic database relevant tomodelling of aqueous systems.
  • Analyse experimental data to improve the understanding of liquid source term phenomena.
  • Developing and validating simulation models, focusing on thermodynamic aspects and geochemical tools to predict fission product behaviour.
  • Be involved in implementation of the developed models into simulation codes and algorithms.
  • Work closely with project partners from other leading research institutions.
  • Present research findings at international conferences and workshops.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of project results through various communication channels.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in computational modelling and experimental domains to improve data analysis.
Profile
  • Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with computational chemistry and simulation tools.
  • Prior knowledge of nuclear safety, severe accident analysis, and radioactive material behaviour is a plus.
  • Good knowledge of programming languages (C++ and Python).
  • Independent, self-driven, creative, and solution oriented.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and a team-player attitude.

With the social and leadership competencies , ETH Zurich has developed a common understanding for a shared work culture. Kindly try to incorporate these six competencies into your recruitment.

We offer
  • Opportunities for professional development and collaboration with leading experts in the field.
  • Your job with impact:
Become part of ETH Zurich, which not only supports your professional development, but also actively contributes to positive change in society.
In line with our values , ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture. We promote equality of opportunity, value diversity and nurture a working and learning environment in which the rights and dignity of all our staff and students are respected.
