Purpose of the roleAs a Functional Safety Engineer, you will support the design, development, and verification of safety-related control systems across a range of complex engineering projects. Working within the EC&I team, you will help ensure that systems meet relevant safety standards and customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in the development of safety-related control systems and documentation
- Support the creation of Functional Safety Plans, Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS), and verification reports
- Contribute to risk assessments, hazard analysis, and SIL/PL determination
- Help implement safety functions using PLCs and safety relays
- Work with engineers across disciplines to ensure integrated and compliant system designs
- Assist in validating safety systems through testing and documentation
- Support compliance with standards such as BS EN 61508, BS EN 62061, and BS EN 13849
- Liaise with suppliers and support safety‑related procurement activities
- Participate in design reviews and audits to ensure functional safety requirements are met
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Control & Instrumentation, or a related field
- Understanding of functional safety principles and lifecycle processes
- Familiarity with safety standards (e.g. BS EN 61508, BS EN 62061, BS EN 13849)
- Experience with PLCs and safety systems (e.g. Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider)
- Ability to read and produce technical documentation and electrical drawings
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety compliance
- Full UK driving licence (some travel may be required)
- Experience in regulated industries such as Nuclear, Defence, or Aerospace
- Knowledge of safety tools such as SISTEMA or FMEA/Fault Tree Analysis
- Exposure to safety validation and verification processes
- Awareness of EMC and Low Voltage Directives
