Electronic and Communication Graduate Scheme
Our 2-year Electronic & Communications Engineering graduate scheme will give you the tools and experience to kickstart your engineering career at Network Rail. The scheme is focused on developing your knowledge, experience, and ability across all aspects of your discipline, while improving your awareness of the impact your decisions have on passengers and freight users.
You will have a genuine impact on the UK’s drive towards Net Zero through the sustainable management of railway infrastructure as the network adapts to climate change.
Our environment matters.
What you’ll be doingYour scheme begins with a period of business familiarisation. This foundation builds your understanding of the railway system across multiple disciplines and departments, after which you move into longer formal placements within your chosen discipline.
Throughout the scheme, you will be exposed to diverse placements and activities across your discipline. You will contribute to delivering major investment, learn how to manage and maintain railway assets efficiently and effectively.
As an Electronic & Communications Graduate, you may choose disciplines such as signalling, Telecoms, and SCADA power distribution systems, experiencing everything from assessment and maintenance to design and renewal.
Who you areYou will need at least a 2:2 in an IET‑accredited degree and the adaptability to travel occasionally for training at various locations. We look for diverse, logical thinkers who find creative solutions to challenging problems. You should be resourceful, hardworking, manage your time well, motivate yourself, and possess great communication skills. You must be able to engage with people at all levels and build relationships with peers and colleagues.
Whatyou’ll get out of it
In the first weeks, you will register with, and have the costs covered for, the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Placements and training are structured towards you becoming a qualified Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng). You will submit quarterly and annual reports to your Mentor, enabling assessment against attributes and signing off the development action plan. Your CPD record will guide you to IEng or CEng within 3‑4 and 5‑6 years respectively.
Your learning will be supported with four modules of technical training. The first gives an overview of engineering disciplines and safety qualification. Subsequent modules relate to your chosen disciplines, and leadership modules will develop your soft skills and leadership potential.
After the two‑year graduate scheme, you will continue receiving support from your Mentor as you transition into your first appointment, advancing your professional development journey.
We matter to millions. You could too.
