Job overview

Due to progression and movement within the team we are looking to recruit enthusiastic and motivated Healthcare Assistants to support Ward 23 Oncology & Haematology at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The ward is a kind and supportive one which is busy and you will need to be able to work under pressure at times and be able to cope with working in what can sometimes be an emotive environment. You will work within the established nursing team on Ward 23 alongside registered nurses, healthcare assistants and therapy staff providing care to patients on the ward.

You will deliver personal care as needed for the patients and will need to have a kind and compassionate nature. This is a lovely and rewarding role requiring commitment to providing a high quality of care for our oncology and haematology patients. You will get to know our patients and their relatives well and develop a good rapport with them to support their needs.

Main

duties of the job

You will support the ward nursing team to provide care for our patients including hygiene needs, provision of personal care, assistance with taking diet and fluids, checking of basic observations.

You will need to work well as part of a team and have good communication skills and a caring nature. You will need to be a keen, calm, motivated and a conscientious individual with a good sense of humour, and be able to show sensitivity in dealing with patients and their relatives who are facing cancer treatment and may sometimes be distressed as a result.

You will be required to work on an internal rotation working day, night and weekend shifts. All shifts are 12.5 hours in length. We can consider set working patterns, and set working days set days off with negotiation. Previous experience as a care assistant would be helpful but is not essential as full training will be given. We are happy to consider part time working but would expect a minimum of 23 hours per week.

We offer specialist Oncology & Haematology training for our HCAs and are committed to further development as appropriate afterwards. Person specification

Education and Quals
  • GCSE in Maths and English grade 9-4 (A –

    C) OR Functional Skills Level 1 or higher
  • NVQ Level 2 in Care
Experience
  • Experience of care either formal or informal e.g. in a care setting or for a family member/ friend.
  • Can demonstrate an understanding, through personal statement and interview, of what is required within the role of a Health Care Assistant in the care setting
  • Describe Trust values and demonstrate how they have put them into practice within their caring role
Awareness of role
  • Evidence of a caring nature / desire to care for patients
  • Awareness of oncology/haematology and a desire to work in the speciality
  • Experience of cancer care - professional or personal
