Assistant Archaeology & Heritage Consultant

Berrys is a historic environment consultancy based in the Midlands. We work from four offices offering planning, architecture, building surveying, valuation and business consultancy services to help clients maximise the value of their assets.

You will be part of a multi‑disciplinary team of planners, surveyors, heritage and archaeology consultants, engineers and architects based in the Shrewsbury office. We provide a supportive environment where autonomy and opportunities to expand your skills are a priority.

Responsibilities
  • Collation of desk‑based archival research
  • Interpretation and analysis of field data
  • Offering expert archaeology advice to colleagues and clients
  • Advising on statutory consents, including scheduled monument consents
  • Using GIS to record and present spatial information
  • Drafting and assisting in the preparation of technical reports, including Desk‑Based Archaeology Assessments, Heritage Impact Assessments, Written Schemes of Investigation and Historic Building Records
  • Tendering and managing archaeological fieldwork
Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in archaeology or a closely related subject in the historic environment
  • Commitment to professional development, including gaining membership of a professional body (e.g. CIfA, IHBC)
  • Excellent written English and creative problem‑solving abilities
  • Knowledge of British archaeology, legislation and the UK planning system
  • Preferably 1 or more years relevant professional experience
  • Ability to advise and offer confident and quality advice as a planning project lead
  • Confident in liaising with a project team with excellent communication skills
  • The role will include outdoor site visits and on‑site advice, so you will need to have a driving licence and a car available
  • Previous experience of any or all of the following would be an advantage:
    • Archaeological fieldwork
    • Historic building assessment and/or recording
    • GIS and/or CAD software packages
    • Assessment of the setting of heritage assets
