The Staff Nurse in the General Surgery / Inpatient Specialist Surgery unit is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered nursing care to surgical patients throughout their inpatient stay. This role involves providing comprehensive pre- and post-operative care, monitoring patients’ conditions, administering medications and treatments, and supporting patients and their families through the surgical journey.
The nurse works as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe clinical practice, timely interventions, and adherence to hospital policies and patient safety standards. Key responsibilities include patient assessment, care planning, wound care management, pain control, patient education, and escalation of concerns when needed.
This position requires strong clinical skills, effective communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced surgical environment. The Staff Nurse plays a vital role in promoting recovery, preventing complications, and ensuring a positive patient experience.
Main duties of the job- Provide safe, evidence-based nursing care to patients undergoing general and specialist surgical procedures.
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized care plans.
- Monitor vital signs, clinical status, and post-operative progress, ensuring timely escalation of concerns.
- Administer medications, IV therapy, and prescribed treatments accurately and safely.
- Perform wound care, dressing changes, drain management, and other surgical-related interventions.
- Support surgeons and the multidisciplinary team during pre-operative preparation and post-operative recovery.
- Educate patients and families on procedures, pain management, discharge plans, and self-care instructions.
- Maintain accurate and timely nursing documentation in line with hospital standards.
- Ensure adherence to infection prevention and patient safety protocols at all times.
- Collaborate with physicians, allied health professionals, and colleagues to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Promote a therapeutic environment by providing emotional support and addressing patient concerns.
- Participate in quality improvement activities, audits, and ongoing professional development.
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of equipment and report any issues promptly.
