Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a Specialist SACT Pharmacist role.
This position is based in the oncology pharmacy team at the Southampton Oncology Centre, one of the largest oncology units in the country. The role focuses on ensuring excellent pharmaceutical support for adult, teenage and young‑adult patients with both solid and haematological tumours, including clinical trial participation and e‑prescribing.
Together with a multidisciplinary care team, you will work with the chemotherapy electronic prescribing system used across six local acute trusts and support the development of an in‑house compounding system. You will act as a clinical role‑model for band seven cancer pharmacists and may manage a small team under the principal pharmacist for cancer services.
DetailedJob Description and Main Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing comprehensive clinical pharmacy services across five in‑patient wards, three out‑patient areas and several outreach clinics.
- Admitting and discharging patients, attending consultant ward rounds, advising the multidisciplinary team, and contributing to patient care.
- Running and developing out‑patient prescribing clinics, with an opportunity to expand services.
- Managing the chemotherapy electronic prescribing system, writing and validating protocols, and supporting its operational management across the network of trusts.
- Participating in research, audits, and teaching within the oncology pharmacy.
- Leading on change initiatives, implementing guidelines, and overseeing continuous improvement projects.

- Master’s Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
- Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience
- Advanced Stage 1 competencies in the RPS Advanced Pharmacy Framework for medical or surgical patients
- Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Sound knowledge of clinical pharmacy services within a suitable specialty
- Experience of audit and evaluative work
- Teaching and tutoring experience
- Experience of supervising others
- Experience of implementing change and change management, including development and implementation of guidelines and procedures
- Management qualification or equivalent experience
- MSc or equivalent in clinical pharmacy
- Independent Prescribing qualification
- Advanced Stage 2 or Mastery competencies in the RPS Advanced Pharmacy Framework for medical or surgical patients
- Leadership qualification or experience
- Sound understanding of healthcare priorities and political agendas
- Training in medicines information
- Project Management training or qualification
- Experience of managing others
