HVDC Valve R&D Labs Lead Electrical Engineer

Location:

West Midlands, England, United Kingdom

Brought by GE Vernova, the role is within Grid Systems Integration (GSI) in the Product Delivery Group (PDG). The Lead Electrical Engineer reports to the HVDC Valve Test Team Leader.

Job Description Summary
This multi‑disciplined, hands‑on role requires practical skills in Electrical and Mechanical engineering, strong diagnostic capabilities, IT proficiency, and knowledge of computer networks. Experience in HV test labs or manufacturing and basic fabrication skills are preferred. The candidate must be self‑motivated, safety‑focused, and ready to innovate and develop skills within an industry leader.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe working environment within the labs; implement and govern safe working procedures.
  • Support Engineers in setup and execution of testing; review and enforce safety documentation.
  • Create Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for testing and maintenance.
  • Sourcing and procurement of test equipment and lab consumables.
  • Ongoing maintenance and repair of lab assets.
  • Supervise contractors; review RAMS and issue relevant permits.
  • Operate forklift trucks, cranes, MEWPs (training provided).
  • Maintain calibration of test equipment.
  • Develop 5S and continuous improvement activities.
  • Support implementation of CAPEX activities.
Desired Knowledge & Experience
  • Previous electrical testing experience.
  • Using test instrumentation (oscilloscopes, HV dividers, multimeters, shunts/CTs, power supplies, telemetry).
  • Electrical/electronic testing and fault‑finding skills (PCB to high voltage).
  • HV electrical safety awareness (clearances, earthing, isolation, VAV).
  • EHS compliance: method statements, risk assessments, LOTO, permits to work.
  • Basic workshop tools usage.
  • Wiring and soldering skills.
  • Independent and team work capability.
  • Hands‑on practical mindset.
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Experience in HVDC or related engineering field.
  • HNC or above or equivalent experience in an HV test environment.
