Senior Lawyer – Highways & Planning

Staffordshire County Council

Overview

Staffordshire Legal Services is an in‑house corporate legal team that supports the Council on a wide range of high value and high profile Highway and Planning matters. As a Senior Lawyer you will deliver specialist legal advice and negotiate complex agreements on behalf of highway and education clients.

Main Responsibilities
  • Advising on County Planning matters, including applications, work generated and planning enforcement.
  • Negotiating complex planning obligations on behalf of highway and education clients.
  • Negotiating highway agreements on behalf of highway clients.
  • Providing advice on a full range of Local Authority statutory Highway and Planning functions.
  • Managing client files in accordance with Lexcel requirements and supervising other members of the team.
Ideal Candidate
  • Qualified Chartered Legal Executive (with practice/advocacy rights), Solicitor or Barrister.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Highway and Planning law.
  • In‑depth understanding of the work carried out within the public sector (previous local government experience not essential).
  • Clear, confident and effective communicator.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Effective time‑management and prioritisation skills, able to work under competing pressures.
  • Capability to delegate work to generate capacity.
