Software Engineer - Red Hat Open Shift Container Platform

Job Summary

To provide consultancy services to customers on the planning, installation, configuration and management of Red Hat’s Open Shift Container Platform based on recognised best practices.

To act as a technical focal point for Open Shift and related technologies within Tier 2, including ongoing involvement in the Open Shift Commons community.

To be responsible for the installation, configuration and ongoing management of Tier 2’s cloud infrastructure, including AWS and Open Shift.

Our Location

Subject to restrictions, the role will primarily be based in Stevenage, Herts , with a requirement to occasionally work on customer sites throughout the UK & Ireland, and potentially mainland Europe.

As we emerge from the pandemic, we will be offering a balance between home, office and client‑site working.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Middleware, the Container Platform Consultant will perform a key role in helping our customers design and implement their digital transformation strategy on Red Hat’s Open Shift Container Platform. Although all underpinned by technical expertise, the assignments will be many and varied, and will include,

For example
  • Planning and performing the installation and configuration of Open Shift Container Platform on hybrid cloud environments – to include a combination of on‑premise, AWS and Azure;
  • Deployment and configuration of containerised services on Open Shift Container Platform, such as Jenkins, Red Hat Runtimes and integration services such as Red Hat Fuse and AMQ;
  • Design and development of CI / CD pipelines in Open Shift;
  • Design and development of custom Operators for automating Kubernetes tasks in Open Shift;
  • Assisting customers with the migration of non‑containerised applications onto Open Shift;
  • Guiding customers through the on‑boarding process of cloud‑hosted services such as Red Hat Open Shift Dedicated and Red Hat Open Shift Service on AWS (ROSA);
  • Planning and running technical skills transfer workshops for customer development, operations and Dev Ops teams;
  • Assisting with the installation, configuration and ongoing maintenance of Tier 2’s internal cloud infrastructure, comprising Amazon EC2 instances and Open Shift environments;
  • Acting as a technical focal point for Open Shift and related technologies within Tier 2, including ongoing involvement in the Open Shift Commons community;
  • Development of technical blog posts and case studies.
Skills and experience
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a Linux Systems Engineer (preferably with RHCE qualification) including installing, configuring and maintaining Linux server environments;
  • Practical experience, including installation and maintenance, of container technologies, e.g. Docker and Kubernetes;
  • Practical experience of configuration management / deployment automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, and Chef;
  • Experience of working with the leading cloud platforms, such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure;
  • Experience of working in a Dev Ops environment;
  • Sound knowledge of data serialisation languages such as JSON and YAML;
  • Exposure to both Windows and Linux operating systems;
  • Familiarity with standard Dev Ops tools such as Git, Jenkins, Team City etc;
  • Use of monitoring tools such as Kibana, Nagios, Grafana, Prometheus, etc.
