Why join the team?BBC Scotland Operations is looking for a motivated individual to join our Gaelic teams in Stornoway and train as a Technical Operator specialising in radio. Our team provides expert technical support and production skills for a wide range of radio programmes and live broadcasts across Scotland.
Based in BBC Stornoway, this is a unique opportunity to develop your skills through specialised training and hands‑on experience. You’ll play a key role in supporting BBC Radio nan Gàidheal output from the Western Isles, contributing to this vital Gaelic radio service.
Your key responsibilities and impact- Sound – learn how to capture, mix, and deliver clear, high‑quality audio for live and pre‑recorded radio programmes.
- Studio Operations – operate broadcast equipment, manage studio set‑ups, and ensure smooth technical delivery during live output.
- Outside Broadcasts – support live radio coverage from locations across the Western Isles and mainland Scotland, helping bring events to air.
You will learn both on and off the job. You’ll attend regular meetings (in‑person or virtual) with our learning provider, working towards an industry‑recognised SCQF Level 7 qualification in Creative Media.

- Team player who enjoys working as part of a creative team, thrives in live broadcast environments, and is eager to learn technical skills that keep our radio output on air.
- Genuinely interested in radio and committed to developing technical and creative abilities – no previous broadcasting experience is required.
- Fluent in Gaelic language, to serve our Gaelic‑speaking listeners of BBC Radio nan Gàidheal.

Eligibility criteria- Be 18 years old or over by the time the apprenticeship begins in September 2026.
- Be legally eligible to work full‑time in the UK for the entire duration.
- Not currently enrolled in another apprenticeship programme.
- No prior learning is required to apply.
For candidates under 19 years of age at 8th September 2026: you must have achieved Core Skills (Scotland) at SCQF Level 5 or 6 in Communication and Numeracy.
