Overhead Line Design Engineer – Freedom
Location:
Stowmarket, England, United Kingdom – optional Leeds, London sites with hybrid work arrangements. Travel to client sites and meetings will be required.
Freedom’s Professional Services team is seeking an Overhead Line Design Engineer to design and deliver OHL new build and refurbishment projects, providing technical expertise and mentoring junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop OHL projects, ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards.
- Conduct conductor sizing and modelling, select insulation, specify lighting protection, route lines, and model in PLS‑CAD, PLS‑TOWER or PLS‑POLE.
- Produce technical documents – engineering reports, specifications, drawings, and calculations – for new build and refurbishment OHL projects (11kV – 400kV).
- Prepare proposals, define scope, allocate resources, cost programs and deliverables.
- Provide technical support and guidance to the team; contribute to tendering, mentoring and training junior engineers.
- Operate within Freedom/NGB quality assurance manual or established project management methodology.
- Attend site visits, inspections and meetings as required.
- Degree in Structural or Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in OHL design at transmission and distribution voltages, covering wood pole and lattice steel tower OHL.
- Experience designing folded steel pole OHL structures is desirable.
- Strong technical knowledge of OHL design principles and UK standards.
- Proficiency in producing designs, calculations, reports and drawings for 11kV–400kV projects.
- Experience with PLS‑CAD, PLS‑POLE and PLS‑TOWER software.
- Excellent communication skills, able to explain technical information to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Knowledge of CDM 2015, Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations.
- Competence in AutoCAD 3D;
Micro Station CAD experience is desirable. - Full UK driving licence.
- Chartered status or close to achieving chartership is preferred.
