Colorectal Robotic Fellow

Sunderland Royal Hospital started its Laparoscopic colorectal service for the North East of England in 2007 and a Robotic colorectal service in 2015. The Colorectal unit now provides Colorectal cancer resection,benign colorectal resections, IBD services, full Pelvic floor service, perianal and complex trans anal surgery , Laparoscopic chernia surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction & re-do surgery. The service has expanded each year with increasing referrals and high volume procedures are performed every year with excellent outcomes.

This post provides a structured educational and surgical experience within a busy colorectal surgical unit with specialist interest in robotic colorectal cancer, IBD, pelvic floor surgery. It is aimed at surgical trainees post-CCT award who wish to practice colorectal surgery.

The successful Fellow will integrate into the team and receive hands‑on training in robotic/laparoscopic colorectal surgery. They will be expected to participate in clinics, MDT, on call, ward work and audit/teaching activities during their attachment. The Fellow will be expected to be part of teaching in NSTC cadaveric lab in Newcastle. Paper presentations and publications are actively encouraged during attachment.

The Trust is advertising for one 6‑month fixed term post commencing 1 April 2026.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to possess Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, should be at the level of CCT and demonstrate competence at the level of a trained Lower GI Surgeon.

The applicant must be competent to participate in a General Surgical on call rota at registrar level and have experience of work at this level (or demonstrable competence) is expected. Any applicant who is unable to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post and modification of the role would be discussed with consultant colleagues.

The successful candidate will be expected to work with other members of the Lower GI team to deliver patient care including inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, in addition to participating with the General Surgical on call service.
