Job Description & How to Apply Below

Overview

The High Power Lab (HPL) is the largest grid-connected short-circuit testing facility in North America and operates independently of utilities and manufacturers. It has controlled power level capabilities for short-duration single-phase tests up to 400 MVA and three-phase tests up to 1,000 MVA. Our team of skilled technologists and engineers conduct testing services including load and fault-interrupting tests, arc-resistance tests, momentary and short-time current tests, and failure-mode and exploratory tests involving applying precisely controlled distribution-level 60 Hz voltage and current to test objects.

Responsibilities
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the high power lab, including setup, calibration, and maintenance of testing equipment.
  • Create test proposals including costing for various tests and reviewing relevant test standards in a timely manner.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrate strong coordination skills with internal teams and external clients to ensure timely completion and delivery of results.
  • Troubleshoot engineering problems and technical issues encountered during testing, propose solutions and implement corrective measures as needed.
  • Develop innovative engineering techniques and apply theoretical and practical knowledge in testing, analysis and problem resolution.
  • Support failure analysis investigations and contribute engineering knowledge on test procedures to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results and adherence to accepted engineering practice.
  • Oversee the maintenance and improvements of laboratory equipment and operations with emphasis on achieving quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Maintain professional relationships and communication with other departments, outside consultants, contractors and suppliers to effectively gather and relay information and resolve issues of concern.
Qualifications
  • A recognized bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. A post graduate degree in Power Engineering or related areas is preferred.
  • Minimum three years of engineering experience in one or more of the following broad fields: leading electrical tests, progressive specialized expertise in the planning, preparation and execution of tests and equipment condition assessment.
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of transmission and distribution equipment design, operation, and electrical testing.
  • Registration (or ability to immediately register) as a professional engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (i.e., non-British Columbia registrations are acceptable as long as there is an ability to immediately transfer the accreditation).
Performance Competencies
  • Demonstrated rigor in modeling awareness and behaviours for working safely in laboratories and the field.
  • Strong experience in writing and editing test reports.
  • Knowledge of project management, including cost control and project administration.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality including experience with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 17025.
  • Entrepreneurial and a proven track record in matching market information with an evolving service offering.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills including the ability to build successful relationships, make presentations to technical and non-technical audiences and liaise with peers in industry.

As part of the selection process, applicants may be required to complete a written test/assessment and/or a presentation as part of the interview process.
