Job Summary
The Addictions Support Worker at Phoenix Society assists clients experiencing mental health and substance use issues. The position is responsible for client support and community building, floor management, case management, and supporting group programs. The Addictions Support Worker facilitates the recovery and capacity-building of clients to maximize their potential and support their goals for successful independent living in the community. The Addictions Support Worker provides appropriate care (non-clinical) such as day‑to‑day physical, emotional, and social support, advocacy, life skills assistance, information, resources, and demonstrations.

Responsibilities

Support Services
  • Participate in case planning with clients and healthcare providers by interviewing clients, gathering information from families and care providers, documenting client needs, and assisting clients to determine appropriate programs.
  • Provide individual support with demonstrations, modeling, and behaviour management to clients, families, and personal networks, helping develop physical, social, emotional, and life skills such as personal hygiene, housekeeping, meal planning, financial management, appointment keeping, and interpersonal skills.
  • Contribute to maintaining a therapeutic environment following therapeutic community principles of empathy, compassion, accountability, trauma‑informed principles, and supportive relationships.
  • Observe clients, assess potential emergency situations, conduct baseline and daily check‑ins, develop short‑term strategies, report medical or behavioural problems, and provide feedback on client needs and progress.
  • Facilitate psycho‑educational client workshops covering life skills, mental health, emotions, behaviour, relapse prevention, contingency management, and transition planning.
  • Identify and connect clients to available social, economic, recreational, and educational resources in the community.
  • Respond to critical issues such as suicide risk, worsening mental health, depression, or anxiety, based on clinical team recommendations.
  • Articulate and reinforce program guidelines to encourage positive engagement.
  • Monitor client activities within residential buildings to ensure appropriate use of spaces.
  • Ensure a safe milieu on treatment floors.
  • Advocate for the client during their stay at the Phoenix Centre.
  • Complete and maintain client‑related records such as care plans, progress reports, statistics, and daily logs.
Community Relations
  • Act as a liaison with the community and promote/encourage community involvement in the program.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of community social, economic, recreational, and educational resources.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Community Social Service.
  • Two years of experience providing one‑to‑one and group support in the community social services sector, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience working with marginalized populations, substance use, mental health services, or corrections (beneficial).
  • Knowledge of the social determinants of health, the biopsychosocial model of addiction, concurrent disorders, and harm reduction principles.
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Tuberculosis screening form.
  • Satisfactory completion of an Employee Immunization Record form.
  • First aid certification with CPR.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Understanding of concurrent disorders, addictions, and addiction supports.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, and experience with a client information or medical records system.
  • Excellent knowledge of issues related to recovery, substance use, concurrent disorders, and homelessness.
  • Knowledge of the BC Mental Health Act, Community Care and Assisted Living Act, Adult Care Regulations, Personal Information Protection Act, and other relevant acts.
