Compensation: $42.27 - $52.81 per hour
The Registered Clinical Counsellor provides counselling and support to individuals experiencing mental health and substance use issues. This role facilitates the recovery and capacity building of residents to maximize their social, economic, and other life potentials and support their goals for successful independent living in the community. Responsibilities include confidential individual or group counselling, tailored client care plans, referrals for additional treatment, and education on mental health and addiction topics.
The counsellor works closely with community resources to provide information and support when required.
- Conduct integrated services assessment interviews, ensuring client privacy and confidentiality.
- Assess client suitability for the program and make referrals to other agencies when necessary.
- Orient clients to the program by educating them on recovery maintenance, relapse prevention, and personal life management.
- Maintain accurate client records, reports, and statistics required by management.
- Ensure all required documentation is complete and on time.
- Collaborate with the integrated addiction services team on clients’ case planning and concerns.
- Coordinate facilities and materials necessary for group sessions.
- Assist with program evaluation and obtain client feedback through questionnaires and surveys.
- Act as a positive role model, coach, advisor, and leader for clients.
- Teach effective social and interpersonal skills through daily groups and appropriate activities.
- Create and maintain a therapeutic environment following community principles that encourage interdependence and responsibility.
- Develop client care plans with the integrated addiction services team.
- Assist clients with identifying high‑risk situations and relapse prevention planning.
- Monitor client progress and modify care plans as necessary.
- Orient client volunteers and provide coaching, guidance, and feedback on assigned tasks.
- Respond to issues that affect the safety and stability of the residential program environment.
- Respond appropriately and effectively to clients in various stages of recovery.
- Apply solution‑focused therapy, addiction counselling, cognitive restructuring, behaviour therapy, and client‑centred approaches.
- Build rapport and encourage clients to make healthy lifestyle choices.
- Provide individual and group counselling to clients impacted by substance use, mental health challenges, trauma, homelessness, or criminal justice involvement.
- Assist clients in problem solving and decision‑making, fostering recognition of problems and solution pathways.
- Help clients mobilize resources to resolve issues or modify attitudes and values.
- Facilitate learning of healthy choices, coping skills, relationships, communication, and conflict resolution.
- Respond to client requests and crises in a timely and flexible manner.
- Provide empathy and respect for the client’s life journey.
- Facilitate relapse prevention and transitional housing community meetings.
- Master’s Degree in counselling and registration with BCACC.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in community social services or equivalent, working with marginalized populations, substance use services, mental health, corrections, etc.
- Knowledge of the population health framework, social determinants of health, the biopsychosocial model of addiction, and concurrent disorders.
- Successful completion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening.
- Successful completion of Tuberculosis Screening and Employee Immunization Record forms, including Covid‑19 vaccination records.
- Excellent knowledge of recovery, substance use, concurrent disorders, homelessness, and addictions counselling.
- Good knowledge of the BC Mental Health Act.
