Position: Research Scientist in Nutrient Cycling 80% (f/m/d)

Overview

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. The Research Unit Forest and Soil Ecology studies the impact of environmental changes on biogeochemical cycles. Within the Long-term Forest Ecosystem Research (LWF) we offer a tenure track position as a Research Scientist in Nutrient Cycling 80% (f/m/d).

Responsibilities
  • Monitor atmospheric deposition and soil solution chemistry across Switzerland.
  • Conduct field sampling and laboratory analysis of samples.
  • Coordinate the involved technical staff, maintain the local database, and forward the data to the European ICP Forests database.
  • Actively participate in the ICP Forests Expert Panels "Deposition" and "Soil and Soil Solution".
  • Apply complex modelling to evaluate the long-term development of nutrient fluxes and cycles.
  • Acquire third-party funding for add-on studies, e.g., nutrient dynamics in the rhizosphere or gas exchange between soil and atmosphere.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in environmental sciences with in-depth knowledge of soil science, biogeochemical cycles and analytical-chemical methods.
  • Efficiency in handling large amounts of data, strong statistical knowledge, and experience in modelling biogeochemical processes.
  • Ability to publish results in international journals and communicate them to stakeholders in forestry practice, policy and the public.
  • Good teamwork skills and experience collaborating with LWF staff and coordinating technical staff.
  • Excellent English skills and good command of German.
