PhD Student in time‑resolved serial crystallography of enzymatic reactions
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland, performing cutting‑edge research in future technologies, energy, climate, health innovation and fundamental sciences. PSI is committed to training future generations, employing 2,300 people.
For the Time-Resolved Crystallography Group in the PSI Center for Life Sciences we are looking for a PhD Student in time‑resolved serial crystallography of enzymatic reactions.
Final date to receive applications: 31 January 2026 (including addresses of referees). Contact:
Dr. Tobias Weinert, phone +41 56 310 54 55.
- Conduct a PhD project on enzyme reaction mechanisms using time‑resolved serial crystallography at synchrotron and XFEL facilities.
- Prepare and run temperature‑controlled experiments (e.g., T‑jump) to probe transient intermediate states.
- Analyze and interpret high‑resolution crystallographic datasets to extract mechanistic insight into enzymatic processes.
- Apply – and where needed, help advance – biophysical methods supporting protein structure/function analysis.
- Optimize experimental sample preparation, including protein expression and purification.
- Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biophysics, or a related field.
- Hands‑on experience with biophysical techniques (e.g., CD, fluorescence spectroscopy, ITC) and protein purification (e.g., FPLC).
- Strong analytical skills, initiative, and the ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary team.
- Prior experience in crystallography (macromolecular crystallography, serial crystallography, crystallographic data processing/refinement) is highly valued.
Our institution is based on interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration. You will benefit from systematic training on the job, personal development opportunities, and a pronounced vocational training culture.
