Job Description

Large Slaughterhouses and Animal by‑products installations are required to use ‘Best Available Techniques’ (BAT) to reduce emissions to air, water and land. We’ve established a process for the definition of BAT within the UK. The regime will use the BAT concept principles of a transparent, collaborative, data and evidence‑led process that safeguards and builds on the current high levels of environmental protection.

Central to this process will be the UK BAT Author.

You’ll be responsible for drafting BAT Conclusions, liaising with Technical Working Groups and presenting a final document suitable for publication as a new, UK‑wide, environmental standard for industry.

Responsibilities
  • Specialist knowledge and understanding of the Slaughterhouse and Animal By‑Products industry.
  • Good understanding of process engineering and environmental issues.
  • Good understanding of environmental legislation and policy in the UK.
  • Capability of critically analysing technical arguments and data.
  • Ability to work with and write technical documents.
  • Good project management skills and a drive to complete.
  • Some travel and overnight stays may be required.
Qualifications / Experience
  • At least 5 years working experience and a solid understanding of environmental regulation SA industry.
  • Expertise in the slaughterhouse and animal by‑products industry.
  • Knowledge of UK and EU industrial environmental legislation, in particular the IED and the Environmental Permitting Regulations.
  • Skills in collecting and technical analysis of complex industrial data.
  • Understanding the implications of BAT Conclusions in permits, on industry and the environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Planning, prioritising and organising tasks and resources to ensure timely and effective results.
  • Responding flexibly to challenges and adept at building consensus.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from different backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in your work.
