Woodward is seeking an experienced Clerk or Senior Litigation Assistant to join our team in our Toronto, ON office location supporting lawyers engaged in complex Aboriginal, environmental and natural resources litigation.

This role offers meaningful work that leverages your extensive litigation experience to a focused area of specialization and an opportunity to evolve in a dynamic and collaborative work environment.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinates with court registries, handles logistics, and arranges for court appearances.
  • Extensive use of litigation software, databases, and document management systems to provide support in complex litigation matters.
  • Independently maintains and organizes calendars, correspondence, court schedules and bring-forward systems; schedules and coordinates meetings; and assists with day-to-day file and practice management.
  • Edits and formats documents such as correspondence, memos, agreements, reports, and litigation records and materials for filing in all levels of court.
  • Follows procedures surrounding the preparation, filing, and service of court documents.
  • Keeps clients’ online files organized and up to date.
  • As needed, reaches out to offices with courts, regulators, and government to identify appropriate contacts or other substantive questions that arise.
Qualifications
  • 6+ years of work experience and/or education in litigation as a focused area of specialization.
  • Relevant post-secondary education, certificate, or equivalent, preferred.
Key Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of rules for civil procedure in Ontario (Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, Court of Appeal), the Federal Court and the Supreme Court, and the ability to determine rules and procedures of tribunals or courts in other jurisdictions.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Case Centre, Justice Services Online, and other electronic court registries, e-filing and e-hearing platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving and resourcefulness with good decision making or judgment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Technical competencies:
    • Advanced use and knowledge of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), including Styles, Tables of Contents, and Adobe Acrobat or similar document processing programs.
    • Familiarity with ON Online, litigation software, and document management systems (e.g., Netdocs).
  • Reliability, flexibility, and dependability are essential for this position.
  • Experience working with Indigenous nations, communities, businesses, or organizations would be considered an asset.
  • Curiosity and an interest in expanding existing skill set as the team advocates for clients in a variety of venues and concerning a variety of challenges.
