As a nurse with acute care experience, you will provide critical advice to bedside providers, educate individuals at home, and make a meaningful impact in Ontario communities and beyond.
Your Role as a Specialist in Poison InformationFollowing a Comprehensive Orientation, You Will:
- Respond to poisoning and drug overdose calls involving both adult and pediatric exposures, providing timely, expert guidance over the phone.
- Perform thorough assessment on patients in both the home and hospital setting.
- Apply knowledge of toxicological principles to develop and adapt evidence‑based care plans, and evaluate their effectiveness in collaboration with our inter‑professional team of medical (or physician) toxicologists, pharmacists, nurses and healthcare providers.
- Provide professional poison information services by analyzing potential toxicity, determining type and severity of exposure, and recommending an evidence‑based treatment management plan.
- Provide information to healthcare professional callers treating a poisoned patient regarding anticipated clinical course, diagnostic approach, interpretation of laboratory results, and appropriate invasive, supportive, and antidotal treatment recommendations.
- Guide appropriate use of antidotes and other treatments of poisoned patients.

Required Qualifications- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or evidence of working towards.
- Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Minimum of 3 years acute care experience, preferably in an intensive care unit or an emergency department.
- Fluency in English is preferred;
French is an asset. - Proficiency in a variety of Windows‑based applications and strong keyboarding skills.
- Demonstrated clinical competence and current knowledge base through continued education and lifelong learning.
- Highly motivated individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate with individuals from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.
- Demonstrated problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as with the inter‑professional team.
- Excellent attention to detail and efficient time‑management skills.
- Demonstrated resilience to adapt to an ever‑changing environment.
- Ability to work under pressure and within a fast‑paced environment.
- Commitment to continuous learning, improvement and evidence‑based practice.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives.
- After achieving eligibility (approximately 2 years of full‑time work as a SPI) it is expected that you will write an examination to become a Certified Specialist as part of our Quality Assurance practice.
