Position Summary

Located at the heart of downtown Toronto, the Krembil Brain Institute at Toronto Western Hospital hosts one of the world’s largest neurosurgical programs, consisting of world‑leading spinal, neurosurgical teams and comprehensive multidisciplinary teams. As part of this Institute, the spinal unit is a UHN Centre of Excellence. UHN seeks a highly motivated professional to fill the key role of a Registered Nurse in our Spine/Neurosurgery Department.

We hire and train newly graduated nurses. Our 28‑bed unit is a specialized spine unit within the KBI and one of a few in Canada. Patients range from those undergoing neurosurgical or orthopedic spine procedures to those experiencing emergent infectious, oncological, or traumatic processes. Common diagnoses include spinal stenosis, herniated discs, spinal cord injuries, spinal tumors and abscesses, neurological disorders, and chronic pain disorders.

Duties
  • Apply knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model.
  • Ensure practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and UHN policy and procedure.
  • Commit to lifelong learning by participating in continuing education activities to meet patient needs and professional standards.
  • Perform reflective practice, analyze and evaluate nursing knowledge, and modify practice to improve quality of care.
  • Perform cross‑functional and other responsibilities, as assigned and/or requested.
Qualifications
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification required.
  • Flexible and able to work effectively and efficiently within an interdisciplinary patient care team.
  • New graduates welcome to apply.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and decision‑making skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • BScN degree preferred.
  • Neurosurgery & spinal experience preferred.
