Youth Worker

We offer 24/7 crisis shelter transitional housing options on-site and, in the community, health and well-being support, training and skill development, and ongoing care once youth move into the community.

For over 40 years, Covenant House has been dedicated to its mission of serving youth on the street and to protect and safeguard all youth with absolute respect and unconditional love. Since 1982, Covenant House has supported more than 100,000 young people.

Overview

In this position the candidate will be responsible for direct implementation of Covenant House’s philosophy, mission statement and policies as they pertain to residential care. We are currently recruiting for 2 Full Time, Permanent Thrive Youth Workers. These are new roles within the organization. This schedule includes day (8am-4pm) and evening shifts (3pm-11pm). Also, 2 Saturdays per monthly rotation.

Responsibilities
  • Ongoing assessment of youths' needs; individual counseling with youth.
  • Crisis intervention in situations of physical confrontation, medical and psychiatric emergencies, and for youth who have recently experienced trauma.
  • Acting as an advocate for youth both within the agency as well with external agencies.
  • Maintaining client files, intakes, discharges, case summaries, completion of all necessary forms pertinent to youths' plans.
  • Providing direct support to Case managers
Qualifications
  • College or university degree or diploma in child and youth work or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years' experience in a shelter or residential setting.
  • Knowledge of adolescent developmental theory and specific issues related to street youth.
  • First Aid, CPR and basic computer skills an asset.
  • Ability to identify, assess and intervene with youth in crisis as individually needed.
  • Ability to work from a trauma informed lens.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
