We are currently seeking a Software Development Manager to join our Engineering team.
This role is hybrid, based out of our Toronto office. You will be expected to be in office a minimum of two days per week for our Anchor Days.
For Development Managers this means supporting and growing your people, ensuring strong execution as a team and as a triad (the Designer, Product, and Development Manager leadership group), and building solid technical solutions. Our development managers are highly technical and hands‑on, often coding, designing, and reviewing alongside their team. They coach and build their teams to be strong technically and strong team members, fostering a safe and productive environment for all Clions.
One of the teams we are hiring for is the Documents team. The Documents team plays an essential role within Clio’s products. The team’s mission is to strengthen the documents platform’s foundation by enhancing security, scalability, and stability, modernizing infrastructure, and reducing the impact of previous technical decisions. By building a flexible and resilient platform, we empower product teams to innovate and deliver value to customers more efficiently.
As a Development Manager in this area, you'll be directly responsible for core features that our customers rely on daily.
A day in the life might look like:
- Collaborating with your triad to understand the challenges our business faces, identify the most impactful opportunities, and craft a roadmap for the team.
- Working with your team on designing the technical solutions.
- Giving great feedback on code reviews, architecture documents, and more to help support team members make great technical decisions for their projects.
- Actively participating as a contributor to the project, either through extensive code reviews or shipping code.
- Holding 1:1 meetings with direct reports to support their career growth and development goals.
- Actively participating in hiring to grow the engineering team at Clio.
- Reviewing code contributed by team members or other Clio developers, and providing expertise on technologies or patterns.
You may be a fit for this role if:
- Demonstrated success in people leadership in software development, particularly with large‑scale SaaS products.
- A strong background in hands‑on software development.
- A diverse base of knowledge that allows you to help your team solve complex technical problems.
- The ability to describe successful projects you worked on and lessons learned from failed projects.
- Growth mindset when it comes to process improvement and new technologies, especially AI.

Serious bonus points if you have:
- A philosophy on what makes for great software development teams.
- Experience with CRM products at scale.
- Experience with Ruby on Rails.
