Software Development Manager, Documents

Summary

We are currently seeking a Software Development Manager to join our Engineering team. This role is hybrid, based out of our Toronto office, and you will be expected to be in the office a minimum of two days per week for our Anchor Days.

Our Development Managers are highly technical and hands‑on, often coding, designing, and reviewing alongside their team. They coach and build their teams to be both strong technically and strong team members, creating a safe and productive environment for all Clions.

The Documents team plays an essential role within Clio’s products. The team’s mission is to strengthen the documents platform’s foundation by enhancing security, scalability, and stability, modernizing infrastructure, and reducing the impact of previous technical decisions. By building a flexible and resilient platform, we empower product teams to innovate and deliver value to customers more efficiently. As a Development Manager in this area, you’ll be directly responsible for core features that our customers rely on daily.

• Collaborate with your triad to understand the challenges our business faces, identify the most impactful opportunities, and craft a roadmap for the team.
• Work with your team on designing technical solutions.
• Give great feedback on code reviews, architecture documents, and more to help support team members making strong technical decisions for their projects.
• Actively participate as a contributor to the project, either through extensive code reviews or shipping code.
• Hold 1:1 meetings with your direct reports to support their career growth and development goals.
• Participate in hiring to grow the engineering team at Clio.
• Review code contributed by members from your team or other Clio developers reaching out for your expertise with a given technology or pattern.

• Demonstrated success in people leadership in software development, particularly with large‑scale SaaS products.
• A strong background in hands‑on software development.
• Diverse base of knowledge that allows you to help your team solve complex technical problems.
• The ability to describe successful projects you worked on, as well as lessons learned from failed projects.
• Growth mindset when it comes to process improvement and new technologies, especially AI.
• Demonstrated ability to hire the best and brightest engineers in a fast‑paced job market, and to coach, develop, and retain engineering talent.
• Being equally energized by your own technical work as well as contributing to the career growth of your team.

• Experience with CRM products at scale.

This role is a backfill for an existing position.

Expected salary range
* for this role is $172,000 to $258,000 CAD. Separate salary bands exist for other regions based on local currency.
