School Bus Driver (252860)

Summary

A School Bus Driver provides daily transportation services to students on an assigned route. The Driver interacts with Parents, Teachers, and other School Board personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Pick up passengers at pre-determined locations
  • Exhibits the highest ethical best practices and personal integrity; shares concerns about suspicious or inappropriate behavior with supervisor or manager
  • Report to work on time and operate route in a safe manner
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections daily, using company tools and swipe technology
  • Practice defensive driving at all times, proactively avoid accidents by practicing safe driving and work habits
  • Lift and close bus doors daily, assist passengers boarding and exiting the bus
  • Evacuate bus in emergency situations and physically assist passengers to evacuate
  • Refill fuel and washer fluid in assigned vehicle when necessary, before picking up passengers
  • Manage student behaviour by exercising communication and discipline as per company policies; report student discipline issues to school and company immediately
  • Report all accidents, incidents, major or minor defects to office immediately
  • Complete all required paperwork (route change sheets, time cards, vehicle repair requests, etc.) in a timely manner
  • Deliver vehicle to office for repairs, preventative maintenance inspections, and repairs
  • Contact parents of passengers if instructed by the company
  • Attend all company safety meetings
  • Adhere to company standards in operation of company vehicles and customer service
  • Follow all company policies as outlined in the employee handbook, as well as local customer service center work directions and instructions
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the company
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must hold valid provincial driver’s license and possess good driving history (no more than 3 demerit points accumulated and no speeding tickets over 24 km/hr)
  • Must have at least 2 years of driving history in Canada
  • Must successfully complete the company provided training program required by the province
  • Ability to obtain the provincial driver’s license required to operate a school bus
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check and Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS)
  • Must successfully complete medical test as per the province’s requirements
  • A First-Aid Certificate may be required depending on the school board
  • Must be available to work a split shift (both morning and afternoon shifts) on a daily basis from Monday to Friday
  • Must possess tact and diplomacy in dealing with students, parents, and school district/board personnel
  • Must be committed, dependable and reliable
  • Company provides training required to obtain the required provincial driver’s license to operate a school bus
Compensation and Benefits

Pay range maxes out at $25/hour. Opportunities to earn additional income on chartered routes or summer camps. Employee referral bonus – earn an additional $250 if someone you refer is hired as a driver. B.Y.K.O.B – Bring Your Kids On Board. Company provides personal protective equipment (i.e., safety vest). Ongoing training & development (i.e., health & safety, defensive driving, etc.). Incentives for good attendance and safety records.

Access to group rates and discounts. No evening or weekend shifts. Only work on school days – enjoy the days off on P.A. Days, statutory holidays, March Break, summer.

Physical Demands, Sensory Demands and Working Conditions

Exercise a high degree of attention and dexterity in the operation of the school bus. Keep the school bus neat, clean, and sweep the interior daily. Must be comfortable driving alone and in all road conditions (i.e., rush hour traffic, snow‑covered roads in winter, etc.).
