.
Energy storage is one of the most exciting areas in the energy sector today. Invinity’s vanadium flow batteries provide a safer, long‑lasting alternative to lithium‑ion cells, delivering 25‑year lifespans, zero fire risk, and continuous operation from full charge to full discharge. With more than 75,000 kWh deployed across 82 projects in 15 countries, Invinity is accelerating the adoption of safe, durable, and scalable energy storage worldwide.
Role OverviewWe are seeking a Materials Scientist / Materials Engineer to join our Product Development organization. Reporting to the Director of Stack Development, you will develop and qualify advanced materials for Invinity’s next‑generation vanadium flow battery stacks. Your expertise in electrodes, bipolar plates, ion‑exchange membranes, and polymer materials will be critical to improving performance, durability, and manufacturability.
Responsibilities- Develop and qualify materials for electrodes, bipolar plates, ion‑exchange membranes, and polymer components in flow battery stacks
- Interpret analytical data from material evaluation techniques, including DMA, DSC, mechanical testing, and porosity testing
- Develop an understanding of how material properties affect performance, degradation mechanisms, and lifetime performance
- Generate material characterization datasets for product design and process capability
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—including design, manufacturing engineering, and supplier quality—to integrate materials into commercial products
- Support supplier identification and qualification and material specification documentation, and participate in material supplier PPAP activities
- Contribute to failure investigations and root‑cause analysis for material‑related issues
- Maintain accurate records and communicate findings to internal stakeholders
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
- 4–7 years of experience in materials development and characterization, preferably in energy storage, flow batteries, or electrochemical systems
- Strong knowledge of composites, polymer materials, and coatings
- Ability to define material defect criteria and ensure alignment with DFMEA and quality standards
- Familiarity with electrodes, bipolar plates, and ion‑exchange membranes
- Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation of material behavior
- Excellent problem‑solving and communication skills
- Experience with flow batteries, fuel cells, or similar electrochemical systems
- Experience with PLM systems and documentation standards
- Experience specifying raw‑material good (roll‑good) materials
- Knowledge of material supply chains and manufacturing processes
- Project‑management experience
- Hands‑on skills in lab setup, sample preparation, and test‑jig assembly
