** About the Position
** This newly created, Canada-based position sits within the national technical support team and is responsible for the design, implementation, validation, and life-cycle support of laboratory automation and robotics across ALS Canada Environmental locations. Established to enhance our automation capabilities and integrate robotic systems into existing processes, the role calls for an ideal candidate who will proactively automate tasks across multiple labs and facilities using advanced robotics, electronics, and programming techniques.
The Robotics Specialist translates manual bench workflows into robust, compliant automated processes; integrates instruments and peripherals; and collaborates with operations, QA, and global ALS partners to improve safety, quality, throughput, and turnaround time.
** Specific Responsibilities
*** Collaborate with cross-functional global teams to identify and automate processes that are currently manual and repetitive.
* Identify, design, develop, and implement automation solutions for repetitive lab/industrial tasks using robotic arms, PLCs, and microcontrollers
* Program and integrate robots and peripherals using C#, Python, Lua, Blockly (and vendor environments); configure device control and schedulers; implement communication protocols (RS-232/COM, Modbus, TCP/IP networking) for end-to-end orchestration.
* Utilize CAD and 3D printing to design/produce custom fixtures, adapters, and labware for automation cells.
* Design and control circuits for automation; perform precision assembly, wiring, and panel build; apply safe use of power tools and basic carpentry/mechanical fabrication as required.
* Integrate data storage/transfer (MSSQL, CSV, XML, JSON) into automated systems; ensure reliable exchange with LIMS and instrument software where applicable.
* Develop SOPs, job aids, and training content; deliver initial and refresher training to analysts and first-line support; maintain change control and validation documentation.
* Maintain, troubleshoot, and continuously improve robotic systems (mechanical/electrical/software); lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for downtime or quality events.
* Standardize critical consumables/labware for automated workflows to optimize price, availability, and performance.
* Maintain project records; summarize time, milestones, and outcomes for potential SR&ED submissions.
* Travel up to ~4 weeks per year to support implementations, training, and audits
* Follow all ALS health & safety policies and laboratory PPE requirements.
* Other duties as assigned by the Technical & Innovation Manager.
** Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
*** Hands-on robotics & automation experience building, programming, commissioning, and integrating systems (mechanical/electrical/software); exemplary troubleshooting across layers.
* Proven expertise in method development and method optimization, and exemplary troubleshooting skills are essential.
* Strong project management skills, able to take an automation project from concept to completion.
* Understanding of safety standards and compliance regulations related to robotics and automation.
* Experience in building and prototyping with mechanical systems and electronics, including 3D printing.
* Mechanical skills, including basic carpentry and power tool usage.
* Strong technical writing (SOPs, validation reports) and communication skills (English).
* Organized, detail-oriented, safety-minded; able to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
* Exceptional training and mentoring skills.
* Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity with scripting (Python/VBA/C#) is an asset. Cross-domain excellence: A rare blend of advanced robotics/automation expertise and practical laboratory operations; direct robotics experience in laboratory testing environments would be especially valuable.
** Required Qualifications
*** Successful completion of a three- or four-year program at a recognized post-secondary institution leading to a degree or diploma in Electronics/Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Automation, or Mechanical/Controls Engineering;
Chemistry or Applied Sciences will also be considered, as will other closely related degrees/diplomas.
* Minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience (10+ years preferred)
** Our benefits include:
*** An estimated annual salary ranging from $65,000 - $100,000 CAD at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.
