Job Summary

We are currently hiring for a Relief Part Time Registered Nurse, Pediatric Emergency/Observation Unit to join our Emergency Pediatrics team at Surrey Memorial Hospital located in Surrey B.C. This position is available until approximately May 2027 or until the return of the incumbent.

Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, and working collaboratively with the inter‑professional care team in the provision of person‑centered care, the Registered Nurse, Pediatrics provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, providing and evaluating nursing care to pediatric patients in a pediatric emergency unit and/or pediatric emergency observation unit.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessment on admission and at regular intervals, develop nursing diagnosis and determine appropriate interventions.
  • Collaborate with patients, families and the inter‑professional team to develop, implement and modify the care plan, establishing therapeutic relationships and advocating for patient rights.
  • Participate in care and discharge planning, ensuring effective implementation and communication with the Patient Care Coordinator.
  • Coordinate nursing care, set priorities, delegate tasks and make referrals according to established protocols.
  • Collaborate with inter‑professional team to identify and resolve issues, changes in patient condition and adjustments to care plans.
  • Provide rapid pediatric assessments in collaboration with Emergency Department staff to facilitate appropriate transfer/treatment and discharge.
  • Teach patients and families focusing on illness prevention and health maintenance to support self‑care and discharge planning.
  • Plan and discuss referral information with patient and families and, in collaboration with the inter‑professional team, initiate referrals to appropriate health care/community agencies.
  • Document assessments, nursing diagnosis, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes/evaluations, and referrals according to practice standards and Fraser Health procedures.
  • Participate in and attend in‑services and other educational programs, maintaining current clinical competence.
  • Act as a preceptor or mentor to guide the clinical experience of assigned new nursing staff and students, promoting family‑centered care and best practice principles.
  • Participate on designated programs and professional committees, care conferences and councils as assigned.
  • Provide feedback to the Manager on the effectiveness of patient care programs, policy/clinical decision support tools and equipment.
  • Participate in quality improvement and risk management activities, reporting safety and risk concerns through the Patient Safety Learning System.
  • Participate in research and special projects, collecting and interpreting data to provide input for further analysis as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Graduation from an approved School of Nursing. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Two (2) year's recent, related clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area and completion of post graduate course work and/or certification applicable to the designated clinical area or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

    Skills and Abilities
    • Clinical proficiency in the designated clinical area.
    • Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and apply pediatric nursing theory to provide nursing care to pediatric patients.
    • Ability to recognize acuity changes.
    • Ability to use factual information, prior learning and basic principles to support nursing decisions and actions with relevant evidence‑based practice.
