JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for managing research activities within the Pediatric Solid Organ Transplant (SOT) Lab at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, led by Dr. Tom Blydt-Hansen. The research program focuses on improving the efficacy and safety of the treatment of childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancers.

The research program focuses on improving the lives of children who have undergone a solid organ transplant. It supports a diversity of research programs, including clinical trials and longitudinal cohort studies, development and implementation of non-invasive methods to detect early signs of kidney graft injury and rejection, and programs to evaluate and improve the quality of life experienced by transplant recipients.

These research programs are delivered with the support of research staff, volunteers and trainees at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral level.

The research manager will work with all team members to meet research goals and objectives. The incumbent will be responsible for managing a full range of research activities including preparing ethics applications and study protocols, identifying funding sources and coordinating grant application submissions, supporting adherence to study protocols and reporting, managing human resources and financial administrations, communicating with funders with project progress and updates, support of research trainees, managing lab communications and knowledge translation activities, and oversee program public outreach and community engagement.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

This position will report directly to Dr. Tom Blydt-Hansen. and may work under general direction of other investigators affiliated with the Solid Organ Transplant Research Program.

WORK PERFORMED

  • In collaboration with Principal Investigators, lead and implement project proposals, translating program priorities into work plans and timelines

  • Develop project budgets and forecasts, oversee research grant expenditures (with accountability for budgets and risk management);determine eligible expenses against budget allocations), prepare financial reports.

  • Leads the document review process alongside researchers, identifying funding sources, advise on funding strategies and developing funding applications. Work with principal investigators to identify and explore funding opportunities, and help develop ideas into grant proposals

  • Draft and submit ethics applications for research projects, liaises with UBC/C&W Ethics Committees on ethics approvals, and assists in resolving related issues.

  • Prepare and supervise the completion of research contracts, clinical trial applications, project utilization approvals and regulatory requirements (national/international) related to funded research.
