Assistant Manager - Shelter
Full time (37.5 hours per week) under the direction of the Shelter Manager. Responsible for day‑to‑day supervision of the multi‑shift shelter services team, ensuring operational efficiency, financial viability and community safety.
Duties and Responsibilities- Supervise shelter staff, including performance management, progressive discipline, coaching and performance reviews.
- Recruit, hire, train and orient shelter resource workers, case workers and shift supervisors to maintain a full roster.
- Collaborate with shelter case planners and shift supervisors to provide case management and gateway services for shelter residents.
- Adjust weekly staffing schedules, process timesheets and manage leave requests.
- Ensure overall safety of the shelter program, develop safety plans and make service denials or restrictions as needed.
- Meet regularly with shelter resource workers, shift supervisors and case planners.
- Review HIFIS documentation and shift reports for accuracy and completion.
- Provide crisis intervention and one‑to‑one support to community members.
- Offer referrals and support to community members about services at First United and in the wider community.
- Maintain cleanliness of the shelter and participate in related duties.
- Other duties as required.
Shift supervisors, shelter resource workers, janitorial staff. Works closely with the Shelter Manager to ensure adequate coverage and a cohesive team culture.
Internal/External Relationships- Regular communication with all levels of management, staff, shelter residents and community members.
- Maintain ongoing communication with management and co‑workers as work is assigned and completed.
- Post secondary education, degree or diploma in a relevant field plus 3 years’ experience in a non‑profit related environment (e.g., emergency shelter, group home, recovery house) OR equivalent education, management and work experience.
- Experience in a unionized work environment and familiarity with a collective agreement.
- Ability to maintain a calm, welcoming, empathetic, and professional demeanor with vulnerable and/or marginalized individuals.
- NVCI and First Aid/CPR training.
Exempt – Management Role. Full time – Five days per week, variable schedule (generally Thursday – Monday, 9 am‑5 pm). Salary range: $78,873.47 to $83,109.14 DOE.
