Recruitment Range: $30.17-$34.48 per hour
Growth Range: up to $38.79 per hour
Schedule:
Regular full-time hours are 32 hours per week - Monday to Thursday, 8 hours per day inclusive of a one-hour paid lunch break.
Hours may be flexible and include times of up to 40 hours per week including Fridays based on operational needs.
The successful candidate will be required to provide an acceptable Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment.
Position SummaryThe Finance & Accounting Associate is responsible for supporting the various financial functions of Esquimalt Nation. This position reports directly to the Director of Finance and will support the finance department in accounts payable, accounts receivable and audit preparation, in addition to many other key functions.
Primary ResponsibilitiesAccounts Payable
- Processes the full cycle of accounts payable, including reviewing and entering invoices, verifying information, and preparing payments.
- Communicates with vendors regarding invoices, payment timing, and any discrepancies.
- Ensures payments are processed accurately and on time and recorded properly in the accounting system.
Banking and Reconciliations
- Records and monitors bank and credit card transactions to ensure all activity is accurately captured.
- Processes employee expense reimbursements in accordance with internal policies.
- Completes monthly bank reconciliations and follows up on any discrepancies.
Financial reporting and Month-End Closing
- Assists with month-end closing activities, including preparing journal entries and reconciling balance sheet accounts.
- Supports the preparation of monthly financial reports for departmental directors and managers.
- Prepares bi-weekly payroll, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
Administrative Support
- Assists with quarterly budget preparation and forecasting.
- Supports the Director of Finance and/or Senior Finance and Taxation Administrator with ad hoc financial analysis and special projects.
- Maintains accurate and well-organized financial records in accordance with retention and audit requirements.
- Performs administrative tasks within the accounting software (Adagio), including support for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger functions.
Other related duties similar in scope and complexity as assigned.
Training, Education, and ExperiencePost-secondary diploma in a related field of study (accounting, financial management, business, etc.), accounting, or financial management plus at least 3 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience (both lived and professional) will be considered. Additionally:
- Working knowledge of accounting principles and standards is required.
- CPA designation, or working towards designation is considered an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Working knowledge of full-cycle accounting, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and basic financial reporting.
- Ability to organize work, manage deadlines, and maintain a high level of accuracy.
- Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of federal legislation and policies as they relate to First Nation governments is an asset.

The Esquimalt Nation administration office is located on Reserve land. As such, in accordance with Section 87 of the Indian Act, individuals who have Status under this act may be eligible for tax-exempt employment income. Eligibility is determined by the Canada Revenue Agency.
