Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Staff Nurse based in our General Ophthalmology Outpatient Department at Walsall Manor Hospital. You will provide high‑quality, efficient care to all patients in both a clinic and surgical role. Previous experience is desirable, but not necessary; you will receive full support from our Ophthalmic Practice Education Facilitator and the Ophthalmic MDT team, and the role requires completion of our education and development program delivered through an in‑house study course.
The Trust has a 12‑month Preceptorship programme for newly qualified staff and local development programmes for experienced staff that provide support, guidance, regular staff engagement, feedback sessions and a supportive team ethos. The department offers a wide range of services including general ophthalmology clinics, minor procedures, Botox clinics, laser clinics and OCT service provision, with the team also covering pre‑ and post‑op cataract surgery.
Responsibilities- Perform Snellon visual acuity tests on patients.
- Assess patient notes and recognise how to prepare the patient for the clinicians.
- Instill eye drops as per PGD guidelines.
- Support laser clinics.
- Support Botox clinics.
- Assist in minor operations clinics.
- Obtain OCT images from patients.
- Admit patients and prepare them for cataract surgery.
- Receive patients back from cataract surgery.
- Provide advice to patients, informing them of after‑care following cataract surgery, and discharge them home.
- Order and prepare notes for cataract surgery patients.
- Order and obtain results of investigations and tests on the trust IT systems.
