Walsall Council – The New Art Gallery Walsall

Full‑time, Permanent, 37 hours per week

Salary – Grade 5: £28,598 – £31,022 per annum

Venue overview
The New Art Gallery Walsall is one of the leading visual arts venues in the West Midlands. Situated in the heart of Walsall town centre, the Gallery is a busy and vibrant building hosting contemporary art exhibitions, collections displays, education events, an artist studio, library, café, and shop. As an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, the Gallery hosts acclaimed exhibitions and houses the renowned Garman‑Ryan collection.

Role overview
We are looking to appoint a conscientious, resourceful, hands‑on, and dedicated Security Coordinator to help deliver the security operations of the venue, ensuring the care, safety and security of our visitors, building, and exhibits.

  • Provide coordination to the security operations of the Gallery, ensuring the care, safety, and security of the premises and its users.
  • Work closely with the Gallery Management team to maintain robust and reliable security support and quality customer service.
  • Coordinate the upkeep of the security team rota to ensure consistent service support as the venue requires.
  • Work proactively to support Gallery operations, events, and general safety with a positive problem‑solving approach.
  • Guide best practice and development of the security team through continuous improvement and support training needs.
  • Promote the safe and secure running of the venue during opening hours by monitoring CCTV, patrolling the building, screening contractors, and supporting health and safety.
  • Act as a key holder, open and lock down the site, operate alarm systems, and be on‑call to attend site out‑of‑hours when required.

Working pattern
This role requires routine weekend work as standard, additional evening work to support events as required, and responding to emergency call‑outs out‑of‑hours on a rota basis. Candidates must be able to respond efficiently to any out‑of‑hours emergencies.

To be successful you will have:

• A solid understanding of the security and safeguarding issues associated with a public building.

• Experience coordinating staff and developing best practices within a team.

• Further experience in a customer‑focussed environment, understanding health and safety requirements, and demonstrating strong communication skills.

• A team‑player attitude, supporting others and getting the best out of them.

• Current SIA licences in door supervision and public surveillance.

• An interest in museums and galleries, with an understanding of what is required to keep a busy visitor attraction robust and dependable.
